Chapel at Western Theological Seminary

Requirements

NOTE: These graduation requirements have to do with the co-curricular activities of morning worship, not the required *courses* in preaching and worship.

WORSHIP REQUIREMENTS

In-Residence Students. M.Div. students in the IR program are expected to prepare and lead daily chapel at WTS at least twice during their seminary career. Dual Track students are expected to lead one service. M.A. and Th.M. students are strongly encouraged to prepare and lead at least one service. However, students are welcome and encouraged to lead more often if they wish.

In advance of each service, students will meet with their Faculty Advisor to read scripture in community. The Chapel Steward is typically present at this first meeting as well, and helps the student brainstorm ideas and then revise and realize worship plans in subsequent meetings.

Distance Learning Students.  Because DL students are on campus for many fewer days than IR students, it is not possible to ask DL students to fulfill this same requirement. Thus, DL students typically volunteer to prepare and lead chapel during the intensive weeks. Students interested in doing so should let Ron or Cherri Westhouse know. Early requests will be honored first.

DL students who live within driving distance of the seminary are encouraged to contact Ron or Cherri to volunteer to lead chapel at least once during their seminary career.

PREACHING REQUIREMENTS

The requirement to preach and to process evaluations of that preaching have been folded into students' internship responsibilities.

  • The evaluation form to be used can be found here in GoogleDoc form.

  • Each student will then be asked to reflect on these evaluations and articulate what he or she hears in them as strengths and growing edges in their ministry as a preacher.

  • For more information, contact Kate Bareman or Tim Basselin in the Student Life office.

+++++++

To be absolutely clear: there is NO graduation *requirement* that M.Div. IR students preach in chapel. There *is* an expectation that students are able and willing to lead the community in worshipful reflection on our life together in God with one another. This may or may not include preaching.
